Libidinal (poem)
By Luke Labern
What is the space between friends?
Notice how the distance between us
Multiples exponentially
As you shatter any and all trust.
But what trust was in place?
Only the unspoken assumption
(Or so I thought)
Of muted competition.
Every time the opportunity arises,
Human nature crawls under the door
And down the gutter
On immorality’s world tour.
I didn’t realise friendship
Correlated precisely with the
Time spent in artificial (romantic)
Interpersonal relationships.
I didn’t realise you
‘[Kept] your enemies closer’ —
No, better yet, I don’t know
Why I credit
You with any of this:
You’re just an inexperienced boy
Incorrectly labelled as a man,
Unworthy of the words I’ve employed:
What’s the space between friends?
I wish I knew the answer.
I do know one thing though:
The libido is friendship’s cancer.
Notice how the distance between us
Multiples exponentially
As you shatter any and all trust.
But what trust was in place?
Only the unspoken assumption
(Or so I thought)
Of muted competition.
Every time the opportunity arises,
Human nature crawls under the door
And down the gutter
On immorality’s world tour.
I didn’t realise friendship
Correlated precisely with the
Time spent in artificial (romantic)
Interpersonal relationships.
I didn’t realise you
‘[Kept] your enemies closer’ —
No, better yet, I don’t know
Why I credit
You with any of this:
You’re just an inexperienced boy
Incorrectly labelled as a man,
Unworthy of the words I’ve employed:
What’s the space between friends?

I do know one thing though:
The libido is friendship’s cancer.
